Extermination Order October 27, 1838

In October 1838, Governor Boggs issued Missouri Executive Order 44, commonly known as the "Extermination Order". The order declares:

"The mormons must be treated as enemies and must be exterminated or driven from the state if necessary for the public know their outrages are beyond all description."

The order authorized state militias to drive the group from Missouri. The most well-known action following this order was the Haun's Mill Massacre in which 17 Mormons were killed during an attack on their village. Because of this threat, most Mormon settlers withdrew from Missouri- later settling in Nauvoo, Illinois.
